Messe de Sainte Anne (Mass of St. Anne)

26 MINUTES |
PERFORMANCE HISTORY:
Justin Lapierre’s Mass of Saint Anne is a powerful statement of faith, acceptance, and connection across people groups. Saint Anne, the grandmother of Jesus, is revered in and around the town of Ste.-Anne-de-Beaupré, but nowhere is she mentioned in the Bible; one of the only texts we have about her is found in the Qur’an. This new work for choir and chamber orchestra is a dialogue across religious and cultural barriers, featuring a French translation of the mass text in a Quebecois dialect, traditional French Canadian fiddle reels, Taizé quotations, and the poetry of Rumi. Lapierre emphasizes the similarities between the principles of Christianity and Islam throughout the work. Also interwoven through the music are Québécois hymns and folk music, the narrative of St. Anne that is found in the Qur’an as well as other Christian texts, and the phrase “Peace be with you,” which is said by Catholics attending Mass, with a handshake to the person next to them. Text: Traditional Ojibwe
Language: Ojibwe, English Premièred by the DaCapo Chamber Choir of Waterloo, ON in 2017 in celebration of Canada's 150th anniversary. (NewWorks 2016, Hon. Mention)
"Miigwetch" is based on a traditional prayer of thanks in the Ojibwe language, and the music searches to explore the spirituality and solemnity through meditative, almost chant-like lines which intertwine and echo each other. Along with this text, the different names of Canada throughout history are also recited in the second choir - ending with 'home'. "Jurors praised not only the composition’s dramatic use of two choirs and interesting use of varied text, but also the respectful way [Miigwetch] honours the indigenous heart of Canada." |
